Transparency

So, I knew this day would come total complete transparency.  I haven’t completely wanted to share the crazy things I have done to save money and make a few extra bucks. But, it’s important to know how gazelle intense we are! You can do this!

Pray, pray for wisdom. Pray for God to open doors. Use your natural gifts and talents. Pray, pray and pray some more.

“When life gets to hard to stand, kneel!”

  • Bought storage units and sold them at garage sale (a lot of work)
  • Turned the heat down
  • Turned the air up
  • Sold ALL kinds of stuff on ebay (everything from collections to clothes)
  • I do my hair at home now. It’s brown and NOT blonde for now.
  • I haven’t had a hair cut in almost a year.
  • Give yourself a pedicure. Only get one on my birthday and when I pay a card off!
  • Turned off our home phone.
  • Took my high end clothes and bags to consignment stores
  • Held many garage sales
  • Only go to the movies 3 or 4 times a year
  • Learned to cook food my family actually likes
  • Took on some side administration work
  • Started a side business with VERY little start up costs
  • Cut our own grass
  • Did water the grass as much-we’re conserving right?!
  • Sold books
  • Took my vacation time and worked at a trade show for a family members business.
  • Take our lunches
  • Cancelled the gym membership
  • Pared down our cell phone usage
  • Sold jewelry
  • We moved into a cheaper-much cheaper place to live (until God blessed us with our house)
  • My husband did some side work for a cabinet company when they were busy.
  • Recycled plastic bottles
  • Raided the piggy banks and make an extra payment on a credit card!
  • Took tax return money to pay off debt
  • Done some pet sitting
  • Sold DVD’s and CD’s
  • Make coffee at home
  • Go on coffee dates rather than dinner dates
  • Raised our insurance deductable
  • Wash my car at home

What have you done?

While we were getting out of debt (We’re now on BS#3) we did a few similar things.

Scaled way back on our TV service (no ESPN for a year!)
Stopped drinking frappuccinos
Carpooled to reduce gas costs
Staycation instead of vacation – just stayed in town (free on my in-law’s hotel points) and had grandparents come watch the kids
Brought lunch to work
No more sodas – just drink water (not bottled)
Still driving a ‘97 car with paint chipping off the top – I call it the Baldtima
Sold collectibles on eBay
Got clippers for Christmas, so I cut my hair and my son’s
Have scissors so my wife cut our daughter’s hair
Got movies at the library (free!) instead of Blockbuster
Swapped clothes between my son and my nephews (older and younger)
My wife watched another boy during the summer when he was out of school

A lot of those are things we still do as we work on saving our Emergency Fund and to replace things like the Baldtima. It’s funny how paying attention can lead you to make changes that don’t seem like a big deal after you get used to them. Keep up the great work!
