The Sermon on the Mount

THE GOLDEN RULE

July 18th, 2010
Pastor Chuck Booher

Matthew 7:12 “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

The Negative of this is found in many places

  • Hillel: 'What is hateful to yourself, do to no other; that is the whole Law, and the rest is commentary. Go and learn.'"
  • Confucius: “What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others."

Sin literally means to miss the mark
James 4:17

Jesus is calling for us to be active and proactive

  • This is the mountaintop of the greatest life you can ever experience.

In Everything

  • Nothing is left out.
  • How we treat others is not dependent on how they treat us; it is based on how we would want to be treated.

Treat people the same way you want them to treat you

  • Treat is literally: you, too, do so for them.
Verb Present Active Imperative—this means we are to continually do for them.
  • Poieo: Also “Create” Used in Septuagint for God created the Heavens and the Earth. We are to Create in the lives of others the Kingdom of Heaven.

Romans 14:17

This is the Law and the Prophets
John 13:34
Philippians 2:1-8

In doing this, Life will become more complicated and complex.

  • You will find that you do not have as much time.
  • You will find that you are doing more for others than for self.
  • You will find that you are actually making a real difference.
  • You will find that your life has meaning.
  • You will find that you are living the greatest life you could ever live.

This is Level 4.
2 Corinthians 5:17

SERMON APPLICATION:

  1. Rereading Matthew 7:12, and spending about ten minutes meditating upon it, in what ways have you succeeded in living this out, and in what ways could you improve upon it?
  2. Pastor Chuck stated earlier that Barclay calls this commandment the “Everest of Ethics”, and went on to state that this is probably the most universal, famous thing that Jesus ever said. What does this say then about the level of importance it ought to have within your own life, and what are you currently doing in order for it to be at that level?
  3. The negative of this command, which is found in many places, centers itself upon self-interest, while Jesus is actually calling for us to live our lives wanting to benefit others. Reflecting upon your life, attitudes, and actions, how have you placed the interest of others ahead of your own interests? Explain and be specific
  4. Jesus is calling you to be active and proactive. If you were to choose to embrace both of these traits, how would doing so increase the quality of your life?
  5. Many have experienced various relationships where there were strings attached. The point of this command however is how we treat others is not dependent upon how they treat us. What is your reaction to hearing/reading this, and in what ways do you believe this might change some of your current relationships?
  6. The word “treat” is literally: you, too, do so for them. As a verb, present, active and imperative, it means we are to continually do for them, and in Greek, the word “Poieo” is also “Create”, as used in the Septuagint for God created the heavens and the Earth. Therefore, we are to Create in the lives of others the Kingdom of Heaven. Considering all of this, what are you actively involved in creating in the lives of others?
  7. God’s desire is that we have healthy relationships... Listed below is a list that Pastor Chuck presented earlier of what your life could become. Looking this list over, in what ways, are you already experiencing some of this, and what could you do or change in order to experience it all?
    • You will find that you do not have as much time.
    • You will find that you are doing more for others than for self.
    • You will find that you are actually making a real difference.
    • You will find that your life has meaning.
    • You will find that you are living the greatest life you could ever live.
