SERMON NOTES

THE HEART OF SUMMER

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED

July 25, 2010
Pastor Chuck Booher

Mathew 7:13-14 Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Enter through the narrow gate.
It is the desire of God for all to be saved

  • 1 Timothy 2:3-4
  • 1 Timothy 4:10
  • 2 Peter 3:9

For the Gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction.
This is the easy road and easy way.
The Lord is warning us that this is a way of destruction.

  • John 10:10

The many who enter through it vs. The few who find life

Some people have a belief system that says everyone is saved.

Many go the way of destruction. Few go the way of life.

  • Luke 13:23-24

Strive to enter-we are not saved by works; yet we must strive.

Many are called few are chosen.

  • Matthew 22:1-14

Has to be the right Jesus

  • John 14:6
  • John 10:7-10

If your belief system is that all are saved:
You are disagreeing with Jesus.
You are insulting a Holy and loving God.
This system cheapens the death of His one and only Son.

SERMON APPLICATION:

  1. Reading Matthew 7:13-14, what has been your understanding of what it means to enter through the narrow gate verses the wide gate?
  2. Based upon scripture such as, 1 Timothy 2:3-4, 1 Timothy 4:10, and 2 Peter 3:9, God’s desire is that everyone be saved. Knowing this truth, how then do you explain that only a few are going to enter the narrow gate in order to be saved?
  3. The broad gate, for which scripture says many choose, is the easy road and easy way, that leads to destruction. Considering that truth, in what ways do you believe our culture, society, and the various forms of media has embraced and influenced people to choose this path, and possibly even you?
  4. Some people have a belief system that says everyone is saved. Jesus in Luke 13:23-24 however, couldn’t be more clearer about how wrong and misguided this line of thought is. What is your reaction to this truth, and in what ways does it motivate you to either change your belief system, or share about your faith and the Gospel of Jesus Christ to others who you know who hold this belief system?
  5. Understanding that although you are not saved by works, you are still to continuously strive to enter through the narrow door. Reflecting upon your life with regard this continuous call to action, what are you doing to strive towards entering through the narrow door? What if anything more could you be doing?
  6. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father but through me”. Considering Jesus’ statement here and your current belief, is your belief system aligned with this scripture or is this scripture causing you to wrestle with your belief system? Explain
  7. Listed below are three things that Pastor Chuck presented earlier regarding those who hold the belief system that all are saved. Taking a few moments to reflect on your belief system and this list, how do the two compare? Is there anything about your belief system that may need changing, and if so, what could you do immediately in order to change it, therefore assuring it is properly aligned with scripture?
    • You are disagreeing with Jesus
    • You are insulting a Holy and loving God.
    • This system cheapens the death of His one and only Son.
