The Sermon on the Mount

KNOWN BY THEIR FRUIT

August 1, 2010
Pastor Chuck Booher

Matthew 7:15-20
"Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, you will know them by their fruits.".

Beware!

False prophets

  • 2 Corinthians 11:13-15

Three times the warning comes in Matthew 24

  • Matthew 24:4-5; 11; and 25

The number one sign of the antichrist is deception

  • 2 Thessalonians 2:8-12
  • Revelation 13:11-14
  • Revelation 19:20
  • Matthew 22:1-14

You will know them by their fruits

Are people coming to know Jesus as Savior and Lord?

  • John 6:40

A tree can only bear fruit if it is healthy and pure

So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.
A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.

The end result

Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, you will know them by their fruits.

SERMON APPLICATION:

  1. Reading Matthew 7:15-20 again, in what ways do you believe this scripture applies to one's life, and more specifically, your life?
  2. Many have heard the cliché, "wolves in sheep's clothing". In what ways do you believe this scripture in Matthew has and still applies even now?
  3. Today 8 million people are attending 2 cults that call themselves Christian. Another 2 to 4 million are attending Churches that have turned from the Bible. What do these statistics then tell you about how easily it is for one to be deceived? What are you doing to assure you remain true to God, Christ, and His Word?
  4. Satan masquerades himself as an Angel of light. In what ways have you seen this deceitfulness present within our society, culture, and maybe even within your family and/or circle of friends?
  5. The number one sign of the antichrist is deception. In Matthew 24, three times Jesus warns about false prophets. What does this then say to you directly about the seriousness concerning false prophets, and what are you doing, or could you be doing in order to be able to spot them when they present themselves?
  6. One way to know whether someone or the message they are speaking is of God is by their fruits. One fruit to then watch for, are people coming to know Jesus as Savior and Lord? Reflecting upon this, what are some avenues in which you see people coming to know Jesus Christ, and what are some avenues in which you now can see that people are being deceived?
  7. Matthew 24:19-20 reveals the end result, which says, "Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, you will know them by their fruits". After reading this scripture, and taking a few moments to truly reflect upon it, in what ways is it a call to action for Christians, and maybe even you personally, to become more proactive in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others?
