The Sermon on the Mount

NOT EVERYONE WHO SAYS "LORD, LORD!"

August 8, 2010
Pastor Chuck Booher

Matthew 7:21-23
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you who practice lawlessness."

  • 2 Thessalonians 1:6-9

SERMON APPLICATION:

  1. Rereading and meditating upon Matthew 7:21-23, what is Jesus saying in this scripture and in what ways is it speaking directly to you?
  2. Jesus, in Matthew 15:8 said, "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far away from me". This then points to the reality that just saying you are a Christian does not make you one. With this in mind, and considering your own life, how does your heart align up with God, and would you consider yourself to be a "true" Christian? If not, what is preventing you from changing or taking that next step?
  3. Listed below are three Wills of God that Pastor Chuck presented to you earlier. Looking over this list, on a scale from 1-10, how is your life presently aligning up with each one, and which one's could use improving? Considering the ones that could use improvement, what could you be doing to assure that happening?
    • The Will of God is to believe in Him
    • The Will of God is to obey Him
    • The Will of God is that you are pure (sanctification)
  4. In Mark 3:35, Jesus said, "For whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and Sister, and Mother." This then implies that does God's will is that you are in a love relationship with Him. With this in mind, what kind of relationship are you presently in with God, and what, if anything do you need to do or change in order for it to reach the level of being a love relationship?
  5. Many people believe that it is by works that a person is saved. The truth however, is that people are saved by Grace through faith. Looking up and reading Ephesians 2:8-10, what is this scripture then saying to you about works, Grace, and faith, and the attitude that you are to have regarding it all individually and collectively?
  6. Based upon Matthew 7:23, there will be some people who claim to know Jesus, but Jesus will respond by saying He never knew them. What does this say then to you about the importance of truly knowing Jesus? What do you believe it truly means to know Him?
  7. All that matters is that you know God in reality and intimately? With both of these things in mind, how well would you say you know God, and what are some ways in which you could come to know Him even better, deeper, and more intimately?
