SOMETIMES I'M SAMSON

September 5, 2010
Pastor Chuck Booher

How often do you start out with the best intentions?

This can happen Spiritually . . .

  • Read through the whole Bible in a year
  • Meditate Every Day
  • Witness Boldly to Everyone
  • Tithe Faithfully

Then . . . . .

    Romans 7:19-25

Sometimes I'm Thomas

  • Named as one of the 12: Matthew 10:3
  • Ready to Die for Jesus: John 11:7-16
  • Wanted to know the Way Jesus was leading: John 14:1-6
  • Doubts the Resurrection: John 20:24-29
  • One of the 7 Fishing with Peter (when Jesus made breakfast): John 21:2
  • In the Upper Room Prayer Meeting when the Holy Spirit Came: Acts 1:13

Sometimes I'm Samson

  • Practical Joker
  • First Words: Judges 14:2 "I saw a woman"
  • Defeats Thousands
  • Falls because of Delilah
  • Kills More in Death than Life
  • Mentioned in the Hall of Fame of Faith: Hebrews 11:32-34

Peter

  • Answers when no one asked a question: Mark 9:6
  • Walked on Water and Sunk: Matthew 14:22-33
  • Made the Good confession then rebuked the Lord: Matthew 16:13-21
  • Ready to fight an Army; backs down to a teenage girl: Mark 16:7
  • Clearly a deep love and commitment to Christ: John 6:66-69
  • Jesus sees him as a Rock: changed his name to "Rock": John 1:40-42

The Change comes when the Holy Spirit comes

  • Preaches Boldly on Pentecost:
    Acts 2      Acts 3:19-20      Acts 5:27-32

SERMON APPLICATION:

  1. In the beginning of Pastor Chuck's sermon, he asked the question, "How often do you start out with the best of intentions?" What's your answer? What has it cost you to only start and not finish?
  2. When you ask the same question about Spiritual things, does anything from this list remind you of an intention never fulfilled? Explain.
    • Read through the whole Bible in a year
    • Meditate Every Day
    • Witness Boldly to Everyone
    • Tithe Faithfully
  3. Read Romans 7:19-25. In what ways do you relate with the struggles and desires that the Apostle Paul spoke about regarding himself?
  4. Pastor Chuck presented you earlier with the idea that sometimes, one may be like Thomas. Look up each scripture below and write out any the similarities to Thomas.
    • John 11:7-16
    • John 14:1-6
    • John 20:24-29
    • John 21:2
    • Acts 1:13
  5. Pastor Chuck then presented that sometimes one may be like Samson; a man with many victories and many failures. When God refers to Samson in Hebrews 11:32-34, He recalls the amazing things in his life. What amazing things are or have you been a part of for God's purpose? What could you do to assure that you'll continue to be a part of God's amazing things?
  6. Peter also had great victories and great failures. What were Peter's victories and failures within Mark 9:6, Matthew 14:22-23, Matthew 16:13-21, Mark 16:7, John 6:66-69, and John 1:40-421. Now with Peter in mind, what are some of your victories and failures?
  7. The change in Peter came when the Holy Spirit arrived in Acts 2. We see the change in action in Acts 3:19-20 and Acts 5:27-32. How have you changed through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit working in you?
